The Macleay bush kangaroo ( Dorcopsulus macleayi ), also known as the Papuan bush kangaroo , is a species of kangaroo belonging to the group of bush kangaroos . It lives in eastern New Guinea .

features

The Macleay bush kangaroo reaches a head-trunk length of 43.5 to 46 cm, a tail length of 31.5 to 34.5 cm and a weight of 2.5 to 3.5 kilograms. The back is gray-brown to dark brown, the belly is lighter. The limbs are the same color as the body. The tail has a bushy fur at its base, the third distant from the body is hairless and white.

Compared to the closely related mountain bush kangaroo ( Dorcopsulus vanheurni ), which sometimes occurs in the same area , the Macleay bush kangaroo is larger, has less rounded ears, has a lighter and less shiny coat and a shorter tail. The tip of the mountain bush kangaroo is dark.

Habitat and way of life

The Macleay bush kangaroo lives in the east of New Guinea in the mountain rainforests at altitudes of 1000 to 1800 meters on the southern slopes of the Owen Stanley Mountains . Little is known about the way of life. It probably feeds mainly on plants, including mushrooms. The females have a single cub per year. Reproduction takes place all year round.

Danger

The Macleay bush kangaroo is listed as Least Concern by the IUCN , as it occurs in a relatively large distribution area of ​​more than 20,000 km² and is still quite rich in individuals.
