The Macrouroidinae are a group of fish from the order of the cod-like (Gadiformes). The two species of the group live bentho to bathypelagic at depths of 600 to 4000 meters, widespread in all temperate and tropical oceans.

features

The Macrouroidinae are 37 to 60 cm long and have a tadpole-like body. The single, long and low dorsal fin begins directly behind the massive head and extends to the end of the strap-like tail, which does not have a caudal fin. The anal fin is also long, but not very developed. Ventral fins may be missing. When present, they are rudimentary and supported by five fin rays. The little eye stands in front of the lower mouth. A goatee is missing. The outer gill-trap rays are slender and long. The number of Branchiostegal rays is seven. There are no luminous organs . The swim bladder has receded.

Systematics

The Macrouroidinae are usually assigned as a subfamily of the grenadier fish (Macrouridae) in the suborder Macrouroidei . In 2009 they were placed by Adela Roa-Varón and Guillermo Ortí as a sister group of the Trachyrincinae in the newly created family Trachyrincidae.
