The Trachyrincinae are a group of fish from the order of the cod-like (Gadiformes). The fish live bentho pelagic at depths of 400 to 2500 meters in all temperate oceans including the tropical eastern Pacific, but not in the western and central North Pacific.
features
The Trachyrincinae are 37 to 60 cm long and have an elongated body that tapers at the back. A caudal fin is missing. The muzzle is long, flattened and pointed. The mouth is below, wide and slightly protractile (can be turned forward). Both jaws are covered with small teeth. The goatee is short or absent. The number of Branchiostegal rays is seven. The gill-trap rays of the first gill arch are slender, short and numerous. They have two dorsal fins, the first short and the second long. The second dorsal fin begins just behind the first dorsal fin. Their fin rays are longer than those of the anal fin. The scales are thick and prickly, sometimes also plate-like. A series of keeled scales run along the dorsal and anal fin. The swim bladder has two or three rete mirabile , muscles to produce sounds are absent. In the species of Trachyrincinae investigated as a result, the number of trunk vertebrae is 14. There are no luminous organs .
Systematics
The Trachyrincinae are usually assigned as a subfamily to the grenadier fish (Macrouridae) in the suborder Macrouroidei . In 2009 they were placed by Adela Roa-Varón and Guillermo Ortí as a sister group of the Macrouroidiae in the newly created family Trachyrincidae.
Genera and species
There are two genera with a total of seven species:
-
Idiolophorhynchus
- Idiolophorhynchus andriashevi Sazonov, 1981
-
Trachyrincus
- Trachyrincus aphyodes McMillan, 1995
- Trachyrincus helolepis Gilbert, 1892
- Trachyrincus longirostris (Günther, 1878)
- Trachyrincus murrayi Günther, 1887
- Trachyrincus scabrus (Rafinesque, 1810)
- Trachyrincus villegai Pequeño, 1971
use
From Trachyrincus scabrus in the depths of the Western Mediterranean apart, the types of Trachyrincinae are not frequent enough and live in to great depths to be of interest for fishing.
