Madame Royale

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Madame Royale was the title of the oldest living unmarried daughter of the French king . The title was similar to that of monsieur , which was usually carried by the eldest brother of the French king.

The title was worn by Élisabeth de Bourbon , the eldest daughter of Henry IV. After her death, the title passed to her sister Christina .

The best-known holder of the title is Marie Thérèse Charlotte de Bourbon (1778–1851), the daughter of Louis XVI. Since a mysterious personality known as the Dark Countess was suspected to be the real Princess Marie Thérèse, she was also spoken of as the "Madame Royale". In the British royal family there is the corresponding title of Princess Royal .
