Madeleine Carruzzo

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Madeleine Carruzzo (born April 9, 1956 in Sion , Switzerland) is a Swiss violinist . She has been a member of the Berliner Philharmoniker since September 1, 1982 and, after around 100 years of existence, was the first woman to receive a permanent engagement there.

Life

Carruzzo first received guitar lessons and only later came to the violin. She completed her studies in Detmold with Tibor Varga .

After completing her studies, she applied to the Zurich Chamber Orchestra for the position of concert master and to the Berlin Philharmonic as an ensemble member. While she was refused in Switzerland because at that time the positions of section leaders were generally not to be filled by women, she received an invitation to audition with the Berliner Philharmoniker on June 23, 1982. There she was able to prevail against 12 competitors.

In addition to her work with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Carruzzo is also active in various chamber music ensembles, including the Philharmonic String Soloists.
