Madonna and Child in Hoven

The sculpture Madonna and Child in the church of the former Marienborn monastery in Hoven , a district of Zülpich in the Euskirchen district in North Rhine-Westphalia , was created in the third quarter of the 12th century.

The 67 cm high wooden sculpture was later polychrome painted . It originally comes from the Marsdorf chapel .

Mary sits in a stiff position on a wooden throne with straight sides and twisted corner posts . She has put her feet next to each other and is holding the baby Jesus with her left arm , who is sitting on her left knee. She holds a scepter in her right hand .

The Madonna wears an undergarment that is only visible over the left foot and around the neck, and a wide skirt with long, falling sleeves. It is held together by a wide belt. A veil falling symmetrically on the back of the neck lies close to her head .

The child, who sits stiffly upright, holds a scepter in the left hand, the right hand is raised in blessing. His clothing consists of an undergarment and a cloak thrown over his left shoulder and then wrapped around his body.

The facial expressions of the figures are striking: long, thin noses and high arched eyebrows. The eyes look puffy.
