The Maduresen (own name in Madurese Orèng Madura ) - also known as Orang Madura and Suku Madura - are an ethnic group that was originally located on the island of Madura . The third largest ethnic group in Indonesia now resides in many parts of the country through the government programs Transmigrasi .

In addition to the Islamic religion, the common characteristics of most of the Madurese people across the archipelago include, above all, the use of the Madurese language. The Madurese are often members of the religious-ethnic Nahdlatul Ulama , a moderate Muslim organization in Indonesia. The existence as a farmer has a key role in the life of the Madurese.

While the Madurese have their roots in Madura, which is off the northeast coast of Java, the majority of the Madurese now do not live on this island. Most of the people in their homeland have emigrated due to poor agricultural resources. The majority live in Java, where an estimated six million Madurese live, especially in eastern Java , where they make up about half of the population.

There are a total of 6.8 million Maduresen in Indonesia. Most of them, about 6,281,000, live in the province of East Java, including the island of Madura. In addition, due to the Transmigrasi policy, about 204,000 Maduresen live in Central Kalimantan and another 62,000 in East Kalimantan .
