Magistra Hersend

Magistra Hersend , also called Hersend or Magistra Hersend Physica ( bl. 1249–1259, Paris ), was a French surgeon who in 1249 king Ludwig IX. on the sixth crusade , which according to different counting in France and England is also considered the seventh crusade. She is one of two women named as a royal doctor or surgeon, the other woman is Guillemette du Luys .

Hersend not only served the king, but was also responsible for Queen Margaret of Provence and the female members of the camp.

A document issued in Acre in 1250 shows that King Ludwig granted her a life annuity for her services in the field of wound medicine .

After returning to Paris, Magistra Hersend married the royal pharmacist named Jacques and settled in a house in Paris. The act of purchase from 1259 has been preserved. After this date there is no longer any reference to Magistra Hersend.

Modern reception

Judy Chicago dedicated an inscription to Magistra Hersend on the triangular floor tiles of the Heritage Floor of her installation The Dinner Party . The porcelain tiles labeled with the name Hersend are assigned to the place with the place setting for Hildegard von Bingen .
