Pieter Adriaan Cornelis Beelaerts van Blokland (born December 8, 1932 in Heerjansdam , Zuid-Holland province ) is a Dutch politician of the Christelijk-Historische Unie (CHU) and later of the Christen-Democratisch Appèl (CDA), the mayor of several cities, between 1977 and 1981 Minister for Housing and Spatial Planning in the Van Agt I cabinet and in 1981 briefly member of the Second Chamber of the States General . Most recently he was the Queen's Commissioner in the province of Utrecht between 1985 and 1998 .

Life

Pieter Adriaan Cornelis Beelaerts van Blokland comes from the noble family Beelaerts van Blokland and was a second cousin of the former Foreign Minister Frans Beelaerts van Blokland . His father Vincent Pieter Adriaan Beelaerts van Blokland was Mayor of Heerjansdam between 1919 and 1946 and Mayor of Barendrecht from 1941 to 1954 . He himself earned a doctorate after studying and was mayor of Wolphaartsdijk from 1963 to 1967 and also a member of the parliament ( Provinciale Staten ) of the province of Zeeland between 1966 and 1967 . He then held the post of Mayor of Vianen from 1967 to 1971 and was also a member of the Provinciale Staten of the province of Zuid-Holland between 1970 and 1971 . He then served as Mayor of Amstelveen from 1971 to 1977 .

Since 2014 Beelaerts van Blokland has been chairman of the Stichting Beelaerts van Blokland Hagen , a foundation for the administration of Kasteel De Kelder in Doetinchem .

On December 19, 1977, Beelaerts van Blokland, who was a member of the Christelijk-Historische Unie (CHU), was appointed Minister for Housing and Regional Planning (Minister van Volkshuisvesting en Ruimtelijke Ordenin) in the Van Agt I cabinet , which he held until his replacement by Dany Tuijnman on September 1, 1981. During his tenure as minister, the urban development program (Verstedelijkingsnota) was discussed, which led to the development of growth centers such as Alphen aan den Rijn , Lelystad and Hoorn . Due to his building policy, however, he received a lot of criticism from political opponents such as Marcel van Dam and Hans Kombrink . On June 19, 1981 he became a member of the Second Chamber of the States General (Tweede Kamer der Staten-Generaal) and represented the interests of the Christian Democratic Appèl (CDA) until September 9, 1981 , to which he had been since October 11, 1980 belonged to.

After leaving the government, Pieter Beelaerts van Blokland was first mayor of Apeldoorn from 1981 to 1985 . On October 16, 1985, he replaced Pieter van Dijke as Commissioner of the Queen (Commissaris van de Koningin) in the province of Utrecht and remained in this office until January 1, 1998, whereupon Boele Staal succeeded him there.

In 1997 he founded the Bloklandfonds named after him , which advocates the connection between nature, culture and history.
