Magnús Gissurarson

Magnús Gissurarson († August 14, 1237 ) was bishop of Skálholt in southern Iceland from 1216 .

Life

Gissurarson belonged to one of the powerful families who were involved in the civil wars of the 13th century, the Haukdælir family . His father was Gissur Hallsson , his brother Þorvaldur Gissurarson . Magnús grew up as the foster son of Þorlákur Þórhallsson , the later canonized bishop of Skálholt.

He was first mentioned as a potential bishop of Hólar . His rival candidate, Guðmundur Arason , was ultimately elected .

In 1214 his nephew Teitur Bersason was elected Bishop of Skálholt. However, he died before he could be consecrated, so Magnús was elected in his place.

Magnús Gissurarson had two sons, Hjalti Magnússon and Gissur Magnússon.
