Magnus Mills

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Magnus Mills (* 1954 in Birmingham ) is a British writer who became known for his novels and short stories.

Life

Magnus Mills lived in Bristol until he moved to London in 1986. Up to this point he was earning his living as a fence builder, as did the protagonists of his first novel The Lords of the Fences . In London he worked as a bus driver. During this time he began writing, first for the Independent for a few weeks and then his first book. After a few years' break, he is now back on the bus route from Brixton to Oxford Circus.

style

Mills uses a laconic style, using short sentences and lots of dialogue. His humor is called deadpan , a British form of dry humor. However, his works are not purely funny, but also address things like freedom and habit. This is how the protagonist's trip to India from Mills' second novel, India Can Wait, ends , for example at a campsite and with a daily visit to the pub.

Awards

The Gentlemen of the Fences was nominated for the Booker Prize and the Whitbread First Novel Award in1998, and won the McKitterick Prize in 1999. His 2015 novel The Field of the Cloth of Gold has been nominated for the Goldsmiths Prize .
