Magnus Chapel in Altusried

St. Magnus is a Protestant chapel in Altusried in the Oberallgäu district on Kemptener Straße.

history

In 1692 the chapel was built by farmers. The carpenter Hans Neher from Überbach made the altar in the style of the early baroque . The altarpiece was created by Franz Benedikt Hermann (painter) . At that time the chapel was named St. Sebastian and St. Sylvester. It was significantly expanded around 1828.

Since then it has been called St. Magnus and St. Sebastian. In the post-war period, the first Protestants were able to use the Catholic chapel. It was not until 1959 that the Evangelical Lutheran Church acquired the chapel for a purchase price of DM 2,000. Pastor Hippe and parish councilor Heinz Kappel had conducted the negotiations. Initially, the Magnus Chapel belonged to the St. Mang parish in Kempten . With the independence of the Markus Congregation in 1970 it came under their jurisdiction. In 1994 the chapel was completely renovated. In the 1990s, the desire for a community center also grew. This is how the Magnushaus was built next to the chapel.

Furnishing

The Magnus Chapel can accommodate around 100 people. On each side, seven of the fourteen cross-way tablets from the Baroque period are lined up, which used to be attached to the vaulted arch. Further ex voto tablets in the rear part of the church date from the period between 1699 and 1820. The figures of saints in the chapel were also adopted in 1959 - St. Sebastian, St. Sylvester and St. George on horseback. Ulrich Mayr's figure of St. Sylvester comes from the 15th century.
