Magyar Villamos Művek ( MVM for short , German Hungarian Electricity Works , also: MVM Group ) is a state-owned energy supply company in Hungary . Despite the partial privatization and liberalization of the Hungarian energy market, MVM continues to hold a dominant position in the field of electricity generation and distribution in Hungary.

According to Deloitte statistics, MVM is one of the 10 largest companies in Hungary and one of the 40 largest in East Central Europe .

With the Paks nuclear power plant and the Mátra lignite power plant , MVM is the (co-) operator of the two largest power plants in Hungary.

history

The company was founded in 1963 under the socialist central government of Hungary as Magyar Villamos Művek Tröszt (MVMT - MVM Trust ). In this monopoly company, the national power plant trust, which had existed since 1954, and the six regional electricity network operators of Hungary were combined.

MVM (T) existed in this form until 1991, when the trust was converted into a group of public limited companies (MVM Group) under the management of a holding company (MVM ZRt.) As part of the dissolution of the state economy . Even in the new legal form, the MVM Group initially remained majority-owned by the Hungarian state. In the mid-1990s, individual subsidiary companies, mostly power plant operating companies, were sold or partially privatized.

As part of a privatization initiative by the Hungarian government in 2008, the majority of Hungary's (partly) state-owned companies - including the MVM Group - are to be gradually privatized.
