Mail Boxes Etc. (MBE) is operated by MBE Worldwide SpA , a subsidiary of the Italian Fineffe Srl . Behind the brand is a worldwide franchise network for shipping, packaging, graphics and printing services for business and private customers. Since it was founded in the USA in 1980, over 2,500 centers have opened worldwide.

Mail Boxes Etc. (MBE) was founded in 1980 in San Diego , California. The original idea was to set up a franchise system. By 1990, over 1,000 stores had opened in the United States. In the early 1990s, Mail Boxes Etc. began expanding outside of the United States by selling master licenses to other countries. Among others, Paolo Fiorelli and his father Graziano Fiorelli founded the Mail Boxes Etc. brand in Italy in 1993. as well as by Fiorelli, Michael Sradnick and Thomas L. Denney Jr. founded the MBE Germany GmbH in 2001 in Berlin. This opened the first MBE Center in Berlin in April 2002. The first MBE center in Austria was opened in Vienna in 1999. In 2003 MBE Germany took over the master franchise license for Austria and Hungary. Today the company is a full member of the Austrian Franchise Association (ÖFV) and the German Franchise Association (DFV).

In 2001, UPS bought MBE . As a result of the acquisition, most of the stores in the US, Canada and India have been rebranded as The UPS Stores since 2003 .

Paolo Fiorelli acquired MBE Worldwide Srl from the UPS parcel service in 2009, including all rights except for the converted UPS locations in the USA, Canada and India. As a result, the worldwide locations were renamed MBE Centers and a strategic partnership with UPS was entered into to further expand.

In 2017, MBE Worldwide, one of the largest entrepreneurial networks with 1,600 locations worldwide, took over PostNet International Franchise Corporation ("PostNet"), a renowned graphics, printing and shipping franchise system with 660 locations in 9 countries and AlphaGraphics, Inc. ("AlphaGraphics") ) a leading design, graphics, marketing and communications trading company. Through these acquisitions, the global MBE network reaches 2,600 locations in 40 different countries.

Mail Boxes Etc., PostNet and AlphaGraphics were able to conclude 2018 for the first time as a "network family" with more than 2,540 service centers in 47 countries and a turnover of 861 million euros. In addition, the Mail Boxes Etc. Network through 5 new master license agreements in Finland, Hong Kong, Hungary, Morocco and Romania.

In February 2020, MBE Worldwide announced an agreement with the funds managed by Oaktree Capital Management LP to drive further long-term growth. Accordingly, Oaktree will acquire up to 40% of the shares in MBE Worldwide through a staged capital increase of 120 million euros (132 million dollars). The current MBE shareholders, the Fiorelli family, continue to own the majority of the company.

The largest national MBE network in Europe is in Italy with over 500 centers. There are over 150 centers in Germany and more than 30 centers in Austria. The global network now includes more than 1,600 MBE centers in 30 countries. In total, MBE currently operates with three different brands: Mail Boxes Etc., AlphaGraphics and PostNet. The global network currently has more than 2,600 locations in 52 countries with more than 10,000 employees and system-wide sales of 918 million euros (1,028 million dollars).

Franchise system

The current franchise fee at MBE is currently 10% of net sales, which in turn is split into 6% license fee, 1.5% marketing fee and 2.5% national media fund. In addition, there is the admission fee and other fees such as training fee, technology platform, setup fee, etc. The investment sum is around 80,000 € and depends primarily on the equipment, size and state of the shop. At the beginning, the centers will be equipped with simple finishing devices and printers for copying and printing. There are additional costs for the start-up costs up to break-even, which MBE specifies between 9 and 18 months.

The franchisee is supported by the master licensees and, if available, regional area franchisees.

The main products offered come from cooperation partners such as UPS, DPDgroup , TNT Express and framework contract partners such as various online printing platforms.
