Mailfence is a web-based email - service , the OpenPGP -based end-to-end encryption and digital signature features. It was started in November 2013 by the ContactOffice Group, which has been running an online collaboration suite for universities and other organizations since 1999.

history

The Malfence project was started in the middle of 2013 by the founders of ContactOffice. In March 2016, the company released the first public BETA version of its email solution with end-to-end encryption and digital signature.

Functions

In addition to its functions for secure e-mail transmission, Mailfence offers additional groupware functions such as an appointment calendar, address book, document management and groups.

e-mail

The e-mail service supports POP / IMAP and Exchange ActiveSync as well as vanity domains with SPF , DKIM , DMARC and catch-all address support. Users can send plain text as well as rich text e-mails, sort messages in folders and / or organize them into categories with tags. Set standard e-mail signatures, assign alias addresses and use Plus Addressing to set filters for incoming messages.

directory

The address book supports ( CSV , vCard , LDIF ) import and (vCard, CSV , PDF ) export of contact data. In addition, entries can be created and edited. The user can compile address lists and organize them with tags.

calendar

The calendar supports vCal / iCal import and export. The user can share his calendar with group members and also make appointment requests.

Documents

Storage space is available for storing documents. The user can drag and drop the data into folders and organize them with tags. The documents can be edited online and accessed via WebDAV .

groups

Groups allow users to securely share documents, contacts and calendars with other group members. A group administrator manages the access rights of group members and can also appoint another group member as co-administrator or new administrator of the group.

Server location

Since the servers are located in Belgium, they are not legally subject to US law. Mailfence is therefore not subject to American gag orders or NSLs . Under Belgian law, all national and international surveillance requests must be made through a Belgian court.

Data security and data protection

In addition to conventional security functions such as SPF , DKIM , two-factor authentication , spam protection , user-side blacklisting, Mailfence offers the following functions:

End-to-end encryption

The service uses an open source implementation of OpenPGP (RFC-4880). Private keys are generated in the client browser, encrypted with the user's passphrase (via AES 256 ) and then saved on the server. The server never sees the user's passphrase.

Digital signatures

The service offers the choice between “Signing” or “Signing and encrypting” an e-mail message with or without an attachment.

Integrated keystore

The service provides for PGP key an integrated keystore and thus requires no add-on / plug-in a third party.

Full OpenPGP interoperability

Users can communicate with any other OpenPGP-compatible service provider.
