Main Island ( English for main island ) is an island in the group of Willis Islands off the western end of South Georgia . With a length of 2.7 km and a height of up to 550 m , it is the largest island in this group, which is what gave it its name.
It was discovered by British navigator James Cook in 1775. Scientists from the British Discovery Investigations mapped and named it between 1926 and 1930.
