The Mainbernheimer Tor

The Mainbernheimer Tor is one of the city gates of the Lower Franconian town of Iphofen . It lies in the west and protected the so-called trench district . It is also called the hospital gate or the grave gate.

History and architecture

The city wall of Iphofens dates back to 1293. The construction of the tower began in 1533 and ended in 1548. In addition, an outer works and a gatekeeper's house were built. Another tower is noted for 1687 south of the gate.

Today the gate presents itself as a square building with a half-timbered structure on the city side . A bridge from the 17th or 18th century leads over the moat to the Vorwerk, a simple passage with a battlement . The Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation leads the gate under the number D-6-75-139-25.
