The Main Bridge Karlstadt is a road bridge in Lower Franconia that spans the Main at river kilometer 226.23 and connects Karlstadt with the district of Mühlbach. The prestressed concrete bridge superstructure dates back to 1952 and was one of the first in Germany to be erected using cantilever cantilevering .

Bridge from 1880

The bridge over the Main between Karlstadt and Mühlbach was inaugurated on November 28, 1880. It was the first bridge over the Main in the 52-kilometer section of the river between Lohr and Würzburg . The road bridge had a 4.4 m wide carriageway and 0.7 m wide sidewalks on both sides. The approximately 160 m long construction had four openings of almost the same size. The main girders of the superstructure consisted of parabolic steel lattice girders with the carriageway below. In spring 1945 the bridge superstructure was blown up by German troops.

Bridge from 1952

In 1952 the superstructure was rebuilt with prestressed concrete. The old pillars and abutments were reused, but had to be widened. The construction has four fields with a total span of 158.89 m. In the outer fields the span is 39.76 m and the two inner fields span 39.68 m.

The total 12.1 m wide road bridge has two lanes each 3.75 m and walkways on both sides with 2.1 m width each. The building system is a continuous beam in the longitudinal direction . In the transverse direction there is a two-cell, 9.4 m wide box girder with three 0.5 m thick webs and a 0.25 m thick deck slab, which protrudes 1.35 m on both sides. With a construction height of 2.0 m above the pillars and 1.5 m in the middle of the field, the hollow box is haunched and prestressed in the longitudinal and transverse directions.

The two outer openings were concreted on a falsework . The preparation of the eastern central opening was made in the cantilever , the cantilever beams up to 40 m has been braced with an auxiliary pylon. The second central opening was cantilevered from both sides.

A bridge pillar is in the middle of the fairway and is not sufficiently safe against ship impact. Since a bridge renovation is too complex, the state building authority of Würzburg decided to build a new one at the end of 2007.
