The Main Bridge Miltenberg is a road bridge that spans the Main at river kilometer 124.8 . The arch bridge was first built in 1900 in natural stone masonry and was rebuilt in reinforced concrete after it was destroyed in 1945 . The building connects the Miltenberg old town with the Miltenberg Nord district.

history

Gatehouse

In Miltenberg there was an important main crossing with a ferry connection since the Middle Ages. In 1876, a bridge building association was finally founded, which commissioned the planning of a building project. In 1885 a bridge building fund was set up , which after many donations showed a total of 429,342 marks by 1898  . On February 28, 1898, the city commissioned the construction company Grün & Bilfinger to erect the structure for 405,000 marks. It was a 7 m wide arched bridge made of local red sandstone with six openings and a distinctive gatehouse on the left bank of the Main. The pillars were founded on red sandstone rock and consisted of quarry stone masonry . On June 5, 1900, the Würzburg bishop Ferdinand von Schlör inaugurated the bridge that connected Miltenberg with the newly acquired northern municipal areas.

On March 28, 1945, the Main Bridge was demolished by German troops. Only the pillars and the gatehouse remained. Since the demolition took place at 5:30 p.m. without informing the population, there were some fatalities. In July 1945 a ferry connection was set up and the first plans for rebuilding the bridge began. In autumn 1945 the clearing and clearing work followed and in February 1946 a working group consisting of the construction companies Philipp Holzmann and Grün & Bilfinger was commissioned to build the new bridge for 1.15 million  Reichsmarks . An arch bridge was to be built using the old pillars and abutments. After the planning was approved by the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior , work could begin in spring 1947. The new bridge finally opened on April 22, 1950. The total costs were 700,000 RM and 1.68 million  DM , which were borne by the city and the Free State.

Construction from 1950

Joint joints

The arch bridge , which is straight in plan, has six openings. It has a 7.0 m wide carriageway and 1.5 m wide sidewalks on both sides. Since the passage opening under the archway is only 7.4 m wide, the sidewalks were led around the tower on brackets for the new building. The two middle shipping openings each have a passage profile with a width of 20 m and a height of 6.40 m at the highest navigable water level. Because the height of the abutments of the first bridge was taken over unchanged, there is a slope of 2.82% on the left and a slope of 1.15% on the right to ensure sufficient clearance.

As a structural system, there is a three-hinged arch in every bridge opening , which is 9.20 m wide, made of reinforced concrete and is clad on the sides with red sandstone. The spans are 32.7 m for the end openings, 35.8 m for the adjacent openings and 37.3 m for the two inner arches. The arrow heights vary between 4.43 m and 6.73 m. The arch thickness changes between 30 cm in the fighter , 50 to 60 cm in the quarter points and 40 cm in the apex. At the top, the pillars are around 3.5 m thick and 13.85 m wide. The 22 cm thick reinforced concrete deck cantilever on both sides 55 cm. The consoles are made of colored concrete. A total of 18 joint profiles are built into the deck above the arches and ridges.

The arch bridge was built in two sections with three arches each on wooden falsework . The northern section was completed at the end of 1948 and the southern section followed a year later. Up to 110 workers were employed on the construction site.
