The Mains of Rochelhill Farm is a homestead near the Scottish town of Glamis in the Council Area Angus . In 1989 the farmhouse was added to the Scottish Monument Lists in Monument Category B. The associated pigeon house , on the other hand, is classified as a monument of the highest category A.

history

In the Middle Ages , the Rochelhill estate belonged to the Ogilvy clan . A mansion on site has meanwhile been abandoned. In 1689, Andrew Wright , stonemason of the Earls of Strathmore , who resided at Glamis Castle , took over the property, which is why it was sometimes known as Wrighthill . However, there still seems to have been a connection to the Ogilvys, as there is a monogram on a lintel and the clan coat of arms on the dovecote. The homestead was built in 1710. In the period between the late 18th and early 19th centuries, the homestead was expanded. Rochelhill was later owned by a James Henderson and was taken over by the Earls of Strathmore before 1871.

description

The farm is isolated around 1.5 kilometers southwest of Glamis. The two-story farmhouse has an L-shaped floor plan. The facades of the quarry stone building are plastered with Harl . Its south-facing main facade is symmetrical and three axes wide. The entrance area emerges from the facade in the middle. The monogram "TO IB" can be read on a door lintel. Essentially four-part lattice windows are embedded along the facade . The oldest part of the building is covered with gray slate.

The pigeon house is a short distance south of the farmhouse. It was built in 1713 and has remained largely unchanged. The masonry of the small elongated building with a pent roof at the end consists of rubble stone. A simple belt cornice runs around it. The roof is covered with regional slate. A coat of arms plate with the inscription "HOP IN THE HEIST" and the year 1565 can be found on the southeast facade. The interior of the building is not divided. There are stone nest boxes lined up.
