Corn mazes are as a summer pleasure scale (usually from July to Thanksgiving used) mazes in maize crops .

A network of paths up to three kilometers long is possible on areas of 10,000 to 45,000 m², for which visitors need up to 1.5 hours. In order to achieve a thicker vegetation (opacity), the maize is usually sown twice (criss-cross). The labyrinth is planned as a true-to-scale sketch of paths, crossings and dead ends and created by milling or cutting after the maize plants have first grown (approx. 10 to 20 cm). When designing such field labyrinths, various aids including GPS technology and cultivated plants such as sunflowers, hemp or millet can be used. In addition to abstract patterns, UFOs , maps, symbols, fairy tale motifs and the like are shown.

Many of these labyrinths use illustrated display boards to provide visitors with interesting facts about agriculture, among other things . They are combined with other attractions: barefoot park , playground, sandpit , herb garden, straw castle , quizzes and competitions, caves, climbing playground , petting zoo , pony rides , picnic niches or live concerts.

The first known corn maze was created in 1993 based on an idea by producer Don Frantz as an aid project for Lebanon Valley College in the US state of Pennsylvania . It was designed by the maze designer Adrian Fisher and depicted a stegosaurus .

Scary labyrinths

In the United States, corn fields have been used as open-air horror mazes since 2000. Scenes are set up in a classic maize maze , in which mostly professional scareactors try to scare the visitors. In 2007 one of the first of these corn labyrinths was built as a horror attraction as part of the Scarefest in the English theme park Alton Towers . In 2010 and 2011 such an attraction could also be found at the Horror Nights in Europa-Park Rust.

Also in 2007 the first night of horrors took place in a classic corn maze. In contrast to the horror attractions, an existing labyrinth is converted here for one or more evenings. The first and now the largest event of this kind is MaisMaze in the Ditzinger corn labyrinth near Stuttgart.

Individual evidence

  1. Colloquially, “labyrinth” and “maze” are used synonymously. For the experts, however, a labyrinth is always just a path that leads to the center without any branches or dead ends. Mazes, on the other hand, gain their appeal through options.
