description

The corner building is in the center of the Henriville residential area, which is home to numerous architecturally interesting 19th century villas. It has the character of a mansion from that period. The museum located in the building today commemorates the life, work and public work of Jules Verne in Amiens. It shows his works and contemporary objects on four building levels. The history of the city of Amiens is also documented with photographs, posters and writings.

Jules Verne's study, where he wrote a number of his works, is on the second floor in the corner of the building. Two rooms in the building have retained their original design. These are the neo- flamboyant -style dining room and the Louis-seize-style living room .

The house was built from 1845 to 1854 during the Second Empire by the notary Jean-Baptiste-Gustave Riquier. He had it built from red brick like the houses in the neighborhood , while the lintels , cornices and window sills are made of limestone . The house differs from the neighboring buildings in the size of its proportions. At the southwest corner of the courtyard facade there is a round tower that gives the architectural ensemble its originality.

In 1882, Jules Verne, who was 54 at the time, moved into the house with his wife Honorine. The couple lived in it until 1900. Of the 34 years that Jules Verne lived in Amiens, he spent 18 years in the house.

In 1945, the oil company BP acquired the house and modernized it while leaving the decoration on the ground floor. It bears witness to the taste of the bourgeoisie at the end of the 19th century.

In 1980 the city of Amiens purchased the house and opened it to the public. In 2000 the city acquired a collection of 30,000 original pieces collected by the Italian collector and Jules Verne researcher Piero Gondolo della Riva (* 1948). From this, the Center international Jules-Verne developed a museum exhibition in Jules Verne's former home by 2010. The association was entrusted with the management of the house until it was taken over by the Amiens libraries in 2011.
