Majorana effect

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Majorana effect (named after the Italian physicist Quirino Majorana ) describes the birefringence of colloidal solutions in a magnetic field in magneto-optics ; Majorana discovered the effect of ferromagnetic iron oxide - Solen . The birefringence is caused by the directivity of the magnetic field (effect on the alignment) on the magnetically anisotropic colloid particles and occurs on light that propagates perpendicular to the magnetic field. The optical axis of the material lies parallel to the magnetic field lines.

The Majorana effect also occurs in diamagnetic sols , the particles of which are perpendicular to the magnetic field.

Similar effects are the Cotton-Mouton effect (birefringence due to the alignment of molecules in the magnetic field) and the Voigt effect (birefringence in the vicinity of intense absorption lines due to the influence on the movement of electrons).
