Marjoram Square
The Majoranplatz in the Graubünden capital Chur is located in the heart of the old town at the end of Poststrasse and at the intersection of the late medieval north-south and west-east transit axes. It has almost the shape of a square and is surrounded by the typical row houses from the reconstruction period after the great fire in Chur in 1464.
Surname
The origin of the name is not clear. It could go back to the medieval office of the Meier , who ran the important inner-city market town, or to the size of the square ( Latin maior = larger, (in comparison) quite large ).
layout
In the middle of the paved square, which is reserved for non-motorized traffic, there is a hexagonal fountain, on whose stele the heraldic animal, the ibex , rests in a lying guard position, which is why the fountain is also called the ibex fountain . One of the coats of arms of the Free State of the Three Leagues is affixed to each of the three sides of the stele on the fountain stock - analogous to the Vazerol monument on the government square . The ibex fountain is the only fountain in Chur that has a dog drinker.
