Makassar oil is a mixed, fragrant oil that was mainly used by men in the 19th and early 20th centuries or in the Victorian and Edwardian periods as hair oil, partly analogous to today's hair conditioner, for combing and hairdressing.

Fruits of Schleichera oleosa

Makassar oil was mostly made from coconut oil , palm oil or oil from Schleichera oleosa and mixed with ylang-ylang oil and other fragrant oils. It was probably so named because the ingredients needed to make oil were imported to Europe via the Dutch-Indian (now Indonesian ) port city of Makassar . The hair oil was mentioned literarily in the epic “Don Juan” by Lord Byron .

In order to prevent a man's hair, rinsed with Makassar oil, from transferring the grease to the back of his chair, the Antimakassar was designed at this time . This is a small, crocheted or embroidered cloth over the back of the chair to protect the upholstery, which can still be found in hotels and public transport today. The antimakassar finds literary mention in the novel Mathilde Möhring by Theodor Fontane .
