The distillation is fractional. This results in several qualities (Extra Superior, I, II and III) of the oil, depending on how long it is distilled. Accordingly, Extra is yellowish-oily with a sweet-floral scent, while III is a yellow oil with a sweet-floral wood scent. The main commercial production site is in Madagascar and the Comoros and only the varieties growing there are used.

composition

The more intense fragrances in the first fractions are p-cresyl methyl ether (5–16%), methyl benzoate (4–9%), (-) - linalool (7–24%), benzyl acetate (5.5–17.5%) and Geranyl acetate (2.5-14%). The ingredients contained to a higher degree in the inferior fractions are sesquiterpenes such as caryophyllene , germacrene-D and ( E , E ) -α- farneses (up to 70% in total in III). The density is 0.95-0.975 (Extra) or 0.905-0.925 (III).

use

Ylang-ylang oil is used in the manufacture of perfumes (for example Chanel Nº 5 ), perfumed soaps and in aromatherapy . In many countries it is considered a medicinal oil. It is also used in foods such as ice cream, sweets and chewing gum.

Kananga oil (Cananga oil, FEMA  2232 ) is distilled from the flowers of the Javanese subspecies of ylang-ylang (var. Macrophylla ).

composition

In its composition, the Kananga oil is similar to the late fractions of the Ylang-Ylang oil. In addition to 2-phenylethanol , geraniol , nerol and nerolidol , it contains larger amounts of the sesquiterpene hydrocarbons, but only very little methyl benzoate and benzyl acetate . The density is 0.906-0.923, the refractive index 1.4950-1.5050.

use

The use of Kananga oil is similar to that of Ylang-Ylang oil. The lower ester content favors Kananga oil for use in soap perfumes.
