FEMA number

The FEMA number is an identification number assigned to chemical substances by the U.S. Flavor and Extract Manufacturers Association (FEMA).

Award

A condition for the assignment of a FEMA number is that the substance is used as a fragrance , aroma or color in food or as a cosmetic ingredient (e.g. in perfumes ). In addition will be made by an expert committee of the FEMA a risk rating: substances with FEMA number are "generally recognized as safe" ( English generally recognized as safe , GRAS ). However, the GRAS status was withdrawn retrospectively due to more recent findings.

Since 1965, around 2000 substances have been assessed by FEMA and given identification numbers. FEMA publishes supplements to the substance list at irregular intervals.

A substance with a FEMA number does not have a special legal status within the EU .
