Ehrhardt Friedrich Wunderlich
Ehrhardt Friedrich Wunderlich (born February 2, 1830 in Rüßdorf , Thuringia , † February 5, 1895 in Pittsburgh ) was a Methodist missionary and song poet.
Life
Wunderlich went to the United States in 1849 , where he converted to Methodism under the influence of his uncle. In 1850 he returned and began to build Methodist congregations in his home region, where he met fierce opposition from church and state authorities and was imprisoned several times. In 1853 he was sent back to America by his church because of this pressure . He reported on his experiences in the book Glaubenskampf, or Freud 'und Leid einer Missionary in Germany , which was published in Cincinnati .
He wrote several sacred songs. His German adaptation of Nearer, my God, to Thee found widespread use.
