Make 'n' Break is a game of skill by the Australian brothers Andrew and Jack Lawson, which was first published by Ravensburger Spieleverlag in 2004 and has since been distributed in numerous editions and several variations. It is a game for two to five players, who in alternating teams have to assemble a set of building blocks according to the given tasks in a given time to make buildings.

Style of play

In Make 'n' Break it comes to recreate the tasks given task cards in a team and under time pressure with blocks and so to get points. The game material consists of ten building blocks, 80 task cards printed on both sides, a timer, a time die and a card holder. Depending on the variant, additional materials can be added, for example a “fun cube” for a “fun variant” in the 2017 new edition of the game.

Game preparation

At the beginning of the game, the task cards are all sorted by color with the same color side (red and blue) facing up and mixed well. Depending on the decision of the other players, the game is played with the easier blue or the more difficult red sides. All cards and the timer go into the card holder, the side of the cards to be played must not be visible. The building blocks and the time die are placed in the middle of the playing field.

Game flow

The standard game is played as a team game with three to five players. At the beginning a starting player is chosen who, together with his left neighbor, forms the first construction team. Both players take any five building blocks and place them in front of them. One of the two players rolls the time die and the timer is set accordingly to one, two or three and locked with the stop button. At the start signal, the right neighbor of the construction team, the controller, presses the start button of the starter and reveals the first card. The construction team now builds the task together as quickly as possible, whereby each player may only use the five stones in front of him.

As soon as the team has completed a task, the controller shouts ok, the building may be torn down again and both players take five more stones before the controller reveals the next card. When the time is up, the inspector calls "stop" and the construction team has to stop building immediately. If the last card was not fulfilled, it is put back in the construction compartment as the top card and becomes the first card for the next construction team. The construction team places all completed building cards in a pile between them. Then the next construction team starts from the left player of the last team and his left neighbor.

The game ends when each construction team has played three times. Each player now counts the points that he has made with the respective left neighbor and adds up the points that he has made with the right neighbor. Whoever has the most points in the end wins the game.

Game play for two players

In a two-player game, the two players play against each other and everyone receives all 10 building blocks when it is their turn. He fulfills the tasks according to the basic rules and receives the cards that he was able to fulfill.

Fun variant

In the fun version, 3 to 5 players play against each other in teams. In contrast to the basic game, all of the building blocks are usually placed in the middle of the table and both players are allowed to roll a fun dice at the beginning, which provides one of six specific game forms for the round:

5 to 5 on the fun cube
  • Describe: The team has to decide who is the builder and who is the architect. The builder receives the order card and has to describe to the architect in words what he has to build.
  • Fingertips: The team may only use one index finger to build and work together accordingly when building.
  • Risk: The team has to decide at the beginning how many cards it wants to fulfill. If it manages the number of cards, it receives the cards, but is not allowed to use the remaining time. If the number of cards does not make it, there are no cards and all cards are returned to the building pile.
  • Vertical - Horizontal: One player in the team may only build the horizontal blocks and the other only the vertical ones.
  • 5 to 5: Each player must take five building blocks at the beginning and may only use these (corresponds to the standard game).
  • Bonus bomb: A bonus bomb initiates a special round in which all players individually against all other games. The active player secretly sets a time and his left neighbor determines a starting player for the round, who receives all the building blocks and has to complete the first task. The player with the timer starts it and puts it face down in the card holder, then the start player gets his task. If he has fulfilled this, he passes the building blocks on to his left neighbor. If a player draws a card with a bomb symbol, he may sit out and his left neighbor must build the card. Play continues until the timer ends and the player whose turn it is loses the round. He receives the card as a star card and places it in front of him. Penalty cards are deducted from the player's result at the end of the game.
