The Macedonian bee ( Apis mellifera macedonica , also Macedonian bee ) is a subspecies of the honey bee from northern Greece (including Athos ) and the eastern Balkan peninsula . It was only recognized as an independent subspecies within the Carnica group in 1988, which has also been confirmed by appropriate genetic studies in recent years .

Morphology and behavior

Apis mellifera macedonica is similar in appearance to the Carinthian bee ( A. m. Carnica ), but its behavior is adapted to the local temperatures with mild winters. The figure is medium in size and slender. The armor color of the workers' abdomen is dark.

The Buckfast bee was u. a. bred from the Macedonian bee.
