Macropolis
A macropolis (plural macropoles ) is a term used in science fiction and fantasy literature for an oversized city that sometimes spans an entire planet .
Emergence
One of the recurring motifs is that the city initially grew in area over the course of centuries and then, after the planet was completely encompassed, was enlarged layer by layer up to several kilometers in height and depth. The lower sections of these cities are often described as dark places where criminals and monsters live. Macropoles are particularly common in the Warhammer 40,000 universe.
Examples
Examples of macropolises are the planets Coruscant and Nar Shaddaa from the Star Wars films and Trantor from the Foundation cycle by Isaac Asimov .
