A macro recorder is used in application programs such. B. text editors or Office packages , or in operating systems a tool for recording macros in order to enable the user to repeat program operations and automate repetitive actions. The recorded macros can be saved for later use. Depending on the application and the underlying macro mechanism, the recorded actions are only made repeatable or converted into a script language . Recorded scripts can be changed in the associated editor.

Known applications with macro recording are Microsoft Office with the scripting language VBA , the text editor Notepad ++ (no recording in a scripting language, only action repetition) and the text editor jEdit with the scripting language BeanShell .
