career

Amateur player until 1960

Günter Tams, who came to Flensburg 08 from VfB Nordmark Flensburg , played with the “Blue-Yellows” from the “Am Sender” sports field until the 1959/60 round. When the 08ers reached 7th place in the 1959/60 amateur league Schleswig-Holstein with 34:26 points, he was appointed to the amateur national team by the DFB. The first use was on November 24, 1959 in the qualifying game for the 1960 Olympic Games in Essen against Poland. DFB coach Georg Gawliczek trusted the defense with goalkeeper Manfred Eglin , the defenders Willi Gerdau and Werner Olk and the runner row with Willi Schulz , Herbert Schäfer and the Flensburg debutant Tams. Against the national team of Poland, the DFB amateurs lost with 0: 3 goals. On his second deployment on March 5, 1960 in London against England, Gerhard Neuser made his debut in the German attack. The second leg on April 18, 1960 in Warsaw against Poland brought after a 1: 3 defeat the final in the Olympic qualification. In May Tams played two more international matches with the amateur national team against Finland and France. In Flensburg's five international appearances, the runners always appeared in the same line-up: Willi Schulz, Herbert Schäfer, Günter Tams. Captain Herbert Schäfer said goodbye with his 24th international game on May 26, 1960 in Saarbrücken against France with a 6-2 win after nine years from the amateur national team and Günter Tams signed a contract with Holstein Kiel for the 1960/61 round at the age of 25 the Oberliga Nord .

Oberliga and Regionalliga Nord, 1960 to 1967

“Storks” coach Helmuth Johannsen immediately used the newcomer from Flensburg as the left runner on the start day of the 1960/61 round, in the 2-1 home win of Kiel on August 14, 1960 against VfL Osnabrück . Tams brought it in the three rounds until 1963 to 55 games and three goals in the Oberliga Nord for Holstein Kiel. From the round 1963/64 Kiel played the association games in the new Regionalliga Nord . The attacking talent Gerd Saborowski came from TSV Siems and the Holstein-Elf took fifth place. As a 30-year-old, Tams was able to celebrate the superior championship in the Regionalliga Nord in his second year. With Franz-Josef Hönig , another great striker had come to Kiel and clearly revived the attack around Gerd Koll , Manfred Podlich and Gerd Saborowski. Günter Tams played all six games in the 1965 promotion to the Bundesliga. Opponents were SSV Reutlingen 05 , Wormatia Worms and Borussia Mönchengladbach , the team of coach Hennes Weisweiler . The performance of the Holstein team in their 4-2 home win on June 19, 1965 against the promoted team from Bökelberg was outstanding . The paths of “Schopper” and Jupp Heynckes often crossed . As the defending champion, Tams and his teammates missed out on the promotion round with only one point less in 1966 - Rainer Skrotzki and Uwe Witt had still joined the team. St. Pauli was champion with 44:20 points. Göttingen 05 and Kiel followed tied with 43:21 points and Günter Tams' team took the ungrateful 3rd place due to the poor goal difference. When Holstein again finished third in the 1966/67 round with coach Rudolf Faßnacht , the senior was no longer a member of the team and ended his career as a contract player in the summer of 1967. From 1963 to 1967 Günter Tams played 67 games in the Regionalliga Nord and scored six goals.
