Macrocytosis

As macrocytosis (macros, Greek for large) is referred to in medicine, the occurrence of abnormally high red blood cells ( macrocytes ) extending according to a blood sampling in blood show and their mean corpuscular volume (MCV) in comparison with the normal case to more than 98 femto liter ( fl) is increased. If there is anemia at the same time, it is called macrocytic anemia .

Macrocytosis is observed among other things:

Myeloproliferative diseases and feline leukemia can also be responsible for macrocytosis in animals . In puppies , macrocytosis is physiological in the first few days of life.

Macrocytosis can develop as an artifact in overaged or damaged specimens.
