Peter W. Vaupel (born August 21, 1943 in Lemberg , Pfalz) is a German doctor and physiologist / pathophysiologist . He is the former head of the Institute for Physiology and Pathophysiology in the Faculty of Medicine at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz . From 2008–2019 he was a (visiting) professor for tumor pathophysiology, strategy consultant at the Clinic for Radiation Oncology and Radiation Therapy, and an expert lecturer in the master's degree in Radiation Biology at the Klinikum rechts der Isar at the Technical University of Munich . Since October 2019 Peter Vaupel has been a visiting scientist at the Clinic for Radiation Medicine at the University Medical Center Freiburg / Br.

Life

After attending the primary school in his place of birth and the then state mathematical and natural science high school in Pirmasens , Peter Vaupel studied medicine at the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz from 1963 to 1968 . From 1965 to 1968 he was a doctoral student and research assistant at the Physiological Institute of the University of Mainz. With a dissertation on the thermal diffusion of ions through cell membranes, he was awarded a Dr. med. PhD. After working as a medical assistant in the municipal hospital in Pirmasens, he received his license to practice medicine in 1970. In the same year he began his medical-scientific work at the then Institute for Physiology at the university. This research and teaching activity was interrupted in 1972/1977 by military service as a medical officer.

In the spring of 1974 he completed his habilitation with a paper on the oxygen supply of malignant tumors and was at the same time appointed professor at the University of Mainz. In 1979 he accepted an invitation as a visiting professor at the Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit (USA). He was appointed head of the Department of Applied Physiology at the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Mainz in 1983. Due to his scientific work in the field of blood circulation and oxygen distribution and the microenvironment in cancer tissue, he was appointed full professor at Harvard University in Boston (USA ). During a very productive research period in his role as Andrew Werk Cook Professor of Radiation Biology, Tumor Biology and Physiology at this elite American university, he received offers from the University of Münster (rejected) and Mainz. After accepting the call to Mainz, he took over the chair for pathophysiology in the medical department of Johannes Gutenberg University in 1989, which he held until his retirement in 2008. Since October 2008 he has been working in the Tumor Pathophysiology Section at the Clinic for Radiation Oncology and Radiation Therapy at the Mainz University Medical Center. In 2011 Peter Vaupel was Visiting Professor at the Department of Physiology, Batterjee Medical College in Jeddah (Saudi Arabia).

Peter Vaupel has been a speaker at international congresses and a scientific expert for many years. For many years he was a member of the Medical Expert Committee of the Institute for Medical and Pharmaceutical Examination Questions (IMPP) and a reviewer for the Projects Committee of Cancer Research of Great Britain. For 10 years he was chairman of the preclinical department committee of the medical department in Mainz and vice dean (1997 to 1999). Peter Vaupel has been a full member of the Academy of Sciences and Literature in Mainz since 1998 . From 1999 to 2003 he was chairman of their commission for medical research.

Peter Vaupel u. a. as co-editor of the two textbooks Anatomie, Physiologie, Pathophysiologie des Menschen (1980, with Gerhard Thews and Ernst Mutschler ; 7th edition with Hans-Georg Schaible and Ernst Mutschler 2015) and Vegetative Physiology (1981, with Gerhard Thews; 5th edition 2005) . Both books are considered standard works. In addition, he is the author / co-author of more than 600 scientific publications and (co-) editor of 16 specialist books on the pathophysiology of malignant tumors. The publications recorded by Web of Science were cited over 26,000 times. Vaupel is one of the most cited pathophysiologists in the world. The current Hirsch index (h-factor) is 65. In 1993, together with Michael Höckel (University Women's Clinic Leipzig), Peter Vaupel described the pioneering mechanism of increasing aggression (malignant progression) in oxygen-depleted (hypoxic) tumors [Cancer Res. 56: p .4509, 1993].

Peter Vaupel's activities in scientific societies and foundations include: a. to call:

  • 1983–1984, 1991 chairman of the German Society for Microcirculation
