Makua (people)

The Makua (also written Macua or Makhuwa ) are a Bantu ethnic group that is located in northern Mozambique and also in the Mtwara region in southern Tanzania . Their population is given for 1996 with 2.5 million.

Their language is the Makua of the same name ( EMakua ), and knowledge of Portuguese is widespread. There are both Christians and Muslims among the Makua, as well as some followers of the traditional religion .

Descendants of Makua who were abducted as slaves in the 19th century now live as Somali Bantu in Somalia .
