Malcolm MacCallum

Malcolm AH MacCallum (* around 1944 ) is a British cosmologist, astrophysicist and applied mathematician.

MacCallum studied from 1963 at Cambridge University (King's College) with a master’s degree in 1970 and a doctorate in 1971. He began and completed his dissertation on spatially homogeneous cosmologies in general relativity under Dennis Sciama (who went to Oxford in 1971) at George FR Ellis . This resulted in several works with Ellis on their classification, exact solutions, theoretical and their observable and dynamic aspects. As a post-doctoral student he was at the University of California, Berkeley with Abraham H. Taub , where he worked on mean Lagrangian for gravitational waves. 1970 to 1976 he was at Kings College in Cambridge, where he was a fellow. In 1976 he became a Lecturer , 1981 Reader and 1986 Professor of Applied Mathematics at Queen Mary College, University of London . From 1993 to 1996 he headed the Mathematics Faculty, was Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science from 1987 to 1990 and 1996 to 1999, and from 1999 to 2002 he was Head of the Faculty of Computer Science there. He retired in 2009 and was visiting professor at the University of Bristol and director of the Heilbronn Institute for Mathematical Research from 2009 to 2012 .

Among other things, he was visiting professor at the University of Catania (1977/78) and in 1988 at Monash University in Melbourne as well as visiting scholar at the Institut Henri Poincaré (1991).

In addition to his research focus on cosmology (anisotropic and inhomogeneous cosmologies, especially Bianchi cosmologies), theory of gravitational waves, black holes, asymptotics and exact solutions of the field equations of general relativity, he also deals with computer algebra (especially with the systems Reduce and Sheep) Applications in general relativity, but also in general with differential equations. He also delved into twistor theory with Roger Penrose .

With Hans Stephani and others, he published a standard work on exact solutions in general relativity in 1980.

From 2010 to 2013 he is President of the International Society on General Relativity and Gravitation, which was a founding member in 1971. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and the Royal Astronomical Society .
