The Malegasse owl or little Madagascar barn owl ( Tyto soumagnei ) is a species from the genus of barn owls ( Tyto ). It is endemic to Madagascar , with its distribution likely being limited to the northeastern part of the island. Sightings of the species are rare, it is said to live mainly in forest clearings, where it is obviously sympatric with the Madagascar barn owl ( Tyto alba hypermetra ), a subspecies of the barn owl . From the first description by Grandidier in 1878 until 1993, no specimens of this species have been discovered. So far only one nest is known.

features

The Little Madagascar Barn Owl has a wing length of about 210 millimeters and a tail length of about 120 millimeters. It therefore has the longest tail of all Tyto species in relation to its body. The barn owl has a reddish-yellow basic color with sparse speckles. The owl lives on native small mammals such as tenreks .

Systematics

The Malegasse owl is classified as an independent species in the genus of barn owls ( Tyto ). The first scientific description comes from Alfred Grandidier in 1878

Danger

The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) lists the species as endangered ("Vulnerable") on its Red List of Threatened Species . This species is considered endangered because its population is believed to be small and is declining due to the destruction and severe fragmentation of its habitat. Climate change could contribute to the loss of part of their habitats in the future .
