The Minahassa barn owl ( Tyto inexpectata ) is a species from the genus of barn owls ( Tyto ). It is endemic to Sulawesi . Sympathetic species on the island are the Celebes Masked Barn Owl ( Tyto novaehollandiae rosenbergi ), a subspecies of the Masked Barn Owl ( Tyto novaehollandiae ), and a subspecies of the grass owl ( Tyto longimembris papuensis ). The habitat of this barn owl includes the dense primeval forests of the island to the coastal alluvial forests . They are found in two protected areas. The Bogani Nani Wartabone National Park on the Minahassa Peninsula and the Lore Lindu National Park in central Sulawesi. Like other barn owls, this species mainly lives on small mammals , probably including fruit bats .

The Minahassa barn owl has a wingspan of about 240 to 250 millimeters and a tail length of about 100 to 120 millimeters. The back color is a reddish brown to black without lighter areas of the drawing, the face veil is light reddish. The tail is marked by (mostly eight) black bands that are speckled rust-brown. The female differs from the male in that the black coloration is only very slight and instead the body is almost completely rust-brown.
