Malietoa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Malietoa is a high Samoan chief title , which also the last head of state of Samoa , Tanumafili II wore.

The structure of Samoan society is based on a complex hierarchy of titles whose bearers are commonly called Matai . At the top of this hierarchy was traditionally the Tafaifa (four-titled), who united the four highest titles (Tui Autua, Tui Aana, Gatoaitele, Tamasoalii) of the archipelago in one person. The last Tafaifa, Tamasese, was deposed by the colonial powers Germany , USA and England in 1889 .
