The Malmesbury Railway was a British railway company based in Wiltshire , England .

history

In 1864 it was planned to connect Malmesbury to the railway network by means of a railway line from Stroud to Christian Malford Halt along the Avon . However, due to differences between the main owners of the construction Wiltshire and Gloucestershire Railway, the Midland Railway and the Great Western Railway , construction was discontinued in 1871.

Then a reduced concept was developed and the Malmesbury Railway received on July 25, 1872 the concession to build the 8.5 kilometer long railway line from Malmesbury to Dauntsey . The cost of construction was estimated at £ 60,000. In Dauntsey there was a connection to the Great Western Main Line between Bristol and London-Paddington . The company was owned by local landowners and contractors and 50% by the Great Western Railway. This was also the operator.

The line was opened on December 17, 1877. With effect from July 1, 1880, the company was taken over by the Great Western Railway.
