Jan Knothe (born February 13, 1912 in Warsaw , † December 19, 1977 in Warsaw) was a Polish architect , graphic artist and poet .

Life

Knothe studied architecture at the Warsaw Technical University . During the Second World War he was imprisoned as a prisoner of war in officers' camp II C near Dobiegniew . There he took an active part in the cultural life of the camp. He wrote a series of poems about Warsaw and a translation of the Ramayana in verse, which was lost when the camp was later evacuated. With Stanislaw Michalski he made woodcuts , bookplates and stamps.

After the war, Knothe was one of the most important architects in the reconstruction of the destroyed Warsaw. His competition proposals (often together with other architects) received numerous awards in the post-war years. These included projects for the Ministry of Industry building, the Społem central building, the Okęcie airport train station, and the reconstruction of the Alexander Church.

Together with the architects Henryk Stamatello , Józef Sigalin , Stanisław Jankowski and Zygmunt Stępiński , he designed the Trasa W – Z expressway , the socially realistic MDM district and the monumental building of the Ministry of Agriculture in Warsaw.

Knothe was known for his talent for drawing. He was able to illustrate projects convincingly. In addition to many other works, he also provided the six-year plan for the construction of Warsaw ( Sześcioletni Plan Odbudowy Warszawy ), which was published in 1950 by Książka i Wiedza , with drawings and views. At the chair for drawing at the architecture faculty at the Politechnika he worked for a while as an assistant under Zygmunt Kamiński .

Knothes' legacy as a graphic artist is extensive and not limited to architectural themes. Thousands of drawings made include works by Konstanty Ildefons Gałczyński , Władysław Jan Grabski (“Saga o Jarlu Broniszu”) and Jan Dobraczyński (“Mocarz”, “Skąpiec Boży”, “Najeźdzcy”). He also illustrated posters. Over several decades, Knothe also published essays and illustrations - mostly on Warsaw - in titles such as “Stolica”, “Problemy” and “Polska”. He developed a special style of drawing - thickets of thin pen strokes and swarms of round dots.

Awards

For his achievements, Knothe was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta, the Order of Sztandaru Pracy and three times the State Art Prize, 1st Class ( Państwowa Nagroda Artystyczna I stopnia ).
