Zygmunt Stępiński
Zygmunt Stępiński (born October 30, 1908 in Warsaw ; † March 17, 1982 ibid) was a Polish architect and urban planner who worked on the reconstruction of the largely destroyed city of Warsaw , especially after the Second World War .
Life
Stępiński came from a Warsaw family. He attended the Adam Mickiewicz Grammar School on Ulica Konopczyńskiego and studied architecture at the Technical University in Warsaw. In the early 1930s he received his diploma and subsequently did his military service with the 21st Infantry Regiment "Dzieci Warszawy" ("Children of Warsaw") stationed in the Warsaw Citadel . He became an employee in Bohdan Pniewski's architectural office . Initially, he designed interiors, such as for the employee casino of the Polish Radio ( Klub Pracowników Polskiego Radia ) on ulica Marszałkowska , exhibition rooms of the Museum of Industry and Technology ( Muzeum Przemysłu i Techniki ) and the demonstration room of the Warsaw electricity company ( Elektrownia Warszawska ) on ulica Kredytowa .
When war broke out in 1939, Stępiński took part in the defense of Warsaw and was later active in the Polish Home Army under the pseudonym "Plastyk" in the combat group "Krybar". From the end of the war Stępiński was one of the leading architects in the reconstruction of Warsaw. He worked in the Office for the Reconstruction of the Capital (BOS) in the departments for monument protection and reconstruction of old buildings . During this time he took part in the reconstruction of the historic Nowy Świat and Krakowskie Przedmieście streets . Together with architects such as Stanisław Jankowski , Jan Knothe and Józef Sigalin , he was responsible for the construction of various major projects, such as the historicizing Mariensztat settlement , the Trasa WZ expressway and the real socialist MDM district with Plac Konstytucji .
In 1974 Stępiński retired. Then he published. The architect was twice the winner of the Warsaw Capital Award (Polish: Nagroda m.st. Warszawy ).
