Henryk Stamatello

Henryk Stamatello , (born November 29, 1901 in Siedlce ; † July 8, 1997 ) was a Polish road and bridge construction engineer and professor at the Technical University in Warsaw .

Life

Stamatello's parents were the railway official Stanisław and his wife Władysława, b. Murawska. Grandfather Stamatello immigrated to Poland from Apulia , his wife was Faustyna, a Polish woman. From 1911 Stomatello attended a state high school in Warsaw. After the family was evacuated to Moscow in 1915, he continued his school education there, which he completed on his return to Warsaw in 1920.

As a volunteer he took part in the Polish-Soviet war . He was active in the 20th Scout Battalion , where he was also an instructor, and in 1924 Stamatello was the Polish representative at a jamboree in Copenhagen .

From 1921 to 1927 he studied at the Faculty of Civil Engineering at the Politechnika in Warsaw. His dissertation dealt with the water and sewage system in Kielce . After completing his studies, he joined the municipal water supply and sewerage administration in Warsaw, where he was in charge of the construction of canals and water collection points. He also carried out geological surveys for the construction of the Warsaw subway, which was already planned at the time .

World War II and post-war period

As an employee of the water and sewerage administration of Warsaw since the beginning of the Second World War , Stamatello took part in the Warsaw Uprising in 1944 as the commander of the military personnel of the WSOP (Wojskowa Służba Ochrony Powstania) who were assigned to secure the water supply .

After the end of the war he was appointed head of the Warsaw Water Supply and Sewer Reconstruction Department. After that he was one of the most important planners of the Trasa WZ and took over the building supervision. He negotiated the construction of the modern escalator from Schlossplatz (connection to the Trasa WZ tunnel ), which was largely supplied by the Soviet Union, with the Soviet occupying power and was involved in securing Anna's Church on Schlossplatz in 1949 .

From 1949 he worked at the Politechnika; was there at first professor for civil engineering, later the professor for water and wastewater supply. Stamatello was the author of many specialist publications on the subject of construction and the editor of academic textbooks. He was a member of the Society of Polish Urban Planners (Towarzystwo Urbanistów Polskich) and chairman of the Urban Development Committee of the Association of Civil Engineers and Technicians (Polski Związek Inżynierów i Techników Budownictwa) .
