The Malta-Hochalmstraße leads from the municipality of Malta in Carinthia to the Kölnbreinsperre . It is an 18 km long toll road in a beautiful alpine landscape, which is open from the beginning of May to the end of October from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. The operator is Verbund Hydro Power AG.

It leads through six peculiar natural stone tunnels that are carved into the rock, some hairpin bends and past many waterfalls in the "valley of the falling waters". It goes to an altitude of 1902 meters to the dam in the Hohe Tauern . The road was originally built as a construction road for the Kölnbreintalsperre and was later opened to normal traffic as a tourist attraction. At the end of the street is the Hotel Malta mountain restaurant with an exhibition on the construction of the dam and a mineral exhibition.

Buses no taller than 3.85 and no longer than 14 meters can pass through the tunnels. On some inclines with hairpin bends , the road is only passable in one lane. The regulation is carried out by a traffic light system. The waiting time can be read on a display board and can last 20 minutes.
