Mammal Species of the World. A Taxonomic and Geographic Reference is an English-language scientific- zoological reference work with information on the systematics , scientific naming and distribution of all known modern mammals worldwide down to the species level .

content

The main part of the work, the Checklist of Mammal Species of the World , consists of entries for the individual taxa . The focus is on lower grades, grades above the order are not listed. The checklist is divided into chapters that have been written by different authors since the second edition. The checklist is supplemented by an extensive bibliography and an index.

The system of the third edition is based on the Classification of Mammals Above the Species Level . In the case of higher ranks, the order of the taxa is based on assumed relationships ; in the case of genera and species it is alphabetical.

The individual entries contain the scientific name of the taxon, the name of the first descriptor as well as the year, title and place of publication. In the third edition, the entries on the species contain an English trivial name . This information is based on Common Names of Mammals of the World . For genera the type species is mentioned, for species the type locality . The entries for the species contain the distribution area and the endangered status according to the Endangered Species Act (US ESA), the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) and the Washington Convention on the Protection of Species (CITES). In addition, synonyms are listed and subspecies are assigned in many chapters of the third edition . Different systematic perspectives and scientific names are commented on in text form.
