Charles William Kilpatrick (born June 10, 1944 in Wichita Falls , Texas ), often C. William Kilpatrick , is an American Mammaloge . His main research interests are rodents .

Life

Kilpatrick is the son of Charles Augustus Kilpatrick and Hazel Donehoo. He graduated from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas, with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1968 and a Master of Science degree in 1969 . From 1969 to 1970 he was a lecturer at Midwestern State University.

In 1973 he received his Ph.D. under Professor Earl G. Zimmerman at North Texas State University. PhD in zoology. From 1973 to 1974 he was visiting professor at St. Lawrence University in Canton , New York . From 1974 to 1980 he was an assistant professor and from 1980 to 2009 he was an associate professor at the University of Vermont at Burlington , Vermont. He has been a full professor since 2009. In 1982 he became the curator of vertebrates at the Zadock Thompson Museum of Natural History and in 1985 chairman of the zoological department at the University of Vermont.

Kilpatrick's research interests range from population genetics to molecular ecology to molecular systematics. He deals with the role of stochastic evolutionary forces such as gene drift and the founder effect in shaping the genetic structure of populations. His work includes the use of DNA sequencing and the study of microsatellite variation . Kilpatrick did nine years of field work in Central Asia , including studying the phylogeography of the small mammals of Balochistan and the mountainous regions of northern Pakistan . Other focal points are the white-footed mice ( Peromyscus ) from southern Mexico and Central America and the endemic rodents of the West Indies, especially Cuba.

In 2005 Kilpatrick wrote the chapter on porcupine relatives (Hystricomorpha) in the standard work Mammal Species of the World . In the same year, along with Paulina D. Jenkins , Mark F. Robinson and Robert J. Timmins, he was one of the first to describe the Laotian rock rat ( Laonastes aenigmamus ). In 2017 he wrote the chapter on the family of mouse hamsters (Calomyscidae) in the seventh volume of the Handbook of the Mammals of the World .

Dedication names

In 2017 Robert D. Bradley, Nicté Ordóñez-Garza, Gerardo Ceballos , Duke S. Rogers, and David J. Schmidly named the Kilpatrick deer mouse ( Peromyscus kilpatricki ) in honor of C. William Kilpatrick.
