Paulina Deidre Jenkins (born around 1945) is a British zoologist and curator of the mammalogical collection at the Natural History Museum in London .

life and work

Paulina D. Jenkins studied at the University of London and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree before starting in 1973 as Scientific Officer in the mammals section in the zoology department of what was then officially known as the British Museum (Natural History) . In 1978 she became Higher Scientific Officer, in 1988 Senior Scientific Officer and finally from 1990 head of collections in the mammal group. She has been senior curator of the collection since 2011.

Above all, Jenkins works to organize, maintain and expand the mammal collection of the Natural History Museum . Her focus is on the area of the tenre kitten (Afrosoricida), the insect eater (Eulipotyphla) and the rodent (Rodentia). In addition, she studies the systematics of various groups of mammals and the biogeography of the small mammal fauna of Madagascar and Southeast Asia. She publishes scientific publications and is on the editorial board of Madagascar Conservation & Development . Already in 1992 Jenkins had the Dryad Kleintenrek ( Microgale dryas ) from northeastern Madagascar first described . Especially in the mid-1990s, she took part in several research expeditions to explore the biological diversity of Madagascar. These led to the Andringitra Mountains in the central-south in 1993, to the Anjanaharibe Massif in the northeast in 1994 , to the Anosyenne Mountains in the southeast in 1995 and in 1996 to the Marojejy Massif again in the northeastern part of the island state. In the course of evaluating the extensive data material collected, several new tenre cards were discovered, including the bare-nosed small tenrek ( Microgale gymnorhyncha ) and the mountain small tenrek ( Microgale monticola ). The respective scientific publication of the results of the expeditions took place in the period from 1996 to 2000 and often together with Steven M. Goodman . Alone or together with other authors, she is also the first to describe several other mammal species such as the Laotian rock rat ( Laonastes aenigmamus ) and the Yankari shrew ( Crocidura yankariensis ).

In 2018, Jenkins was the author of the chapter on the tenreks and co-author of the chapter on the shrews in Volume 8 of the Handbook of the Mammals of the World .

Dedication names

With Saxatilomys paulinae , the Jenkins white-toothed shrew ( Crocidura jenkinsi ) and the Jenkins-Kleintenrek ( Microgale jenkinsae ) several mammal species were named after Paulina D. Jenkins.
