Portal Tomb by Knockavally
The portal Tomb by Knockavally ( Irish Cnoc an Bhaile ) is located close to the coast on the Eyrephort Peninsula, northwest of Clifden in Connemara in County Galway in Ireland . In the British Isles, portal tombs are megalithic systems in which two equally high, upright stones with a door stone in between form the front of a chamber, which is covered with a sometimes huge capstone.
Unusually for a portal tomb , the large but severely disturbed megalithic complex is located next to a low rock ledge on a ridge about 75.0 m above sea level. The entire structure is located on a round mound or cairn about 10.0 m in diameter.
Only three stones remain, which are probably a portal stone, a 2.3 m long wall stone and the end stone, which lean against each other. The stones of the north-west-south-east oriented portal tomb are all about 1.6 m high.
Further west, at the end of the peninsula, lies the disturbed Wedge Tomb of Eyrephort.
