Sequoias at Kölpin
Memorial stone for forester Heinrich Hagge

The two sequoia trees near Kölpin in the municipality of Demen in the Ludwigslust-Parchim district , Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, are a natural monument . It is a representative of the giant sequoia species ( Sequoiadendron giganteum ).

The two trees are located in a forest area belonging to the Sternberger Seenland Nature Park between the Demener district of Kölpin and the Crivitz district of Basthorst. They can be reached on foot via a path 350 meters west of state road 9. The natural monument is indicated on site by a wooden signpost. There are two ponds near the sequoias. The larger is named Schapwäsch (Low German for sheep wash ).

The stronger of the 40 meter high giant sequoia trees has a trunk diameter of over two meters at a height of one meter. Under the landowner Julius Hüniken and his forester Heinrich Hagge, the estates were reforested in the 1870s. Hüniken was a member of the Mecklenburg Foresters Association . Due to his interest in dendrology, rare tree species were also planted, such as these giant sequoias, which are otherwise found in North America on the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada in California.

The two sequoias are popularly called Adam and Eve .

At the foot of the trees is a memorial stone for the forester Heinrich Hagge, who worked in the forest estate from 1875 to 1904.

Inscription: "In grateful memory of the landlord Heinrich Hagge Kölpin 1875-1904"

In the coat of arms of the municipality of Demen with its districts of Buerbeck, Kobande and Venzkow, there are two diagonally crossed red tree trunks that burn red and gold at the top. These tree trunks are also intended to symbolize the large forests in the municipality, but above all they stand for a dendrological and forest attraction, for the two giant sequoias in the Kölpiner forest.
